Asbestos Removal Works at Lews Castle, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis

Client: Patton Construction / Neil Mackay & Co
Project: Lews Castle Envelope Works
Division: Licensed Asbestos Removal

Wm. Munro Construction (Highland) Limited’s licensed asbestos removal division negotiated and secured the asbestos removal package as part of the Lews Castle envelope works by principal contractor Patton Construction of Northern Ireland.

The works consisted of the complete removal of all asbestos containing materials from within the Castle to allow restoration works to commence.

The majority of the asbestos was in the form of licensable thermal pipe insulation to the redundant heating systems, the controlled removal of the asbestos containing material required the construction of twenty seven separate polythene enclosures. All materials were removed in strict accordance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

Unfortunately whilst the project was underway the principal contractor Patton Construction was placed in administration, leaving significant losses for all the sub-contractors involved. Munros assisted Neil Mackay & Co (also a sub-contractor) in securing the remaining contract from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and successfully compled the asbestos removal to allow the restoration works to proceed.
